Thank You for Your videos!
You're so welcome! Thank you for watching them :)
Salman rusdi ?????!!! Couldnt youfind another satanic writer , damn you ,all jewish and not found in my list !!????
I just began to read the novel and bought myself the Motteux's translation and then came across this video. Such misfortune
thank you. i have a feeling this may take a while. an amazing but rather confusing mix of jewish / christian and greek mythical imagery. it is clearly brilliant, but not like other neoclassical epic, translation that is - beautiful words, doesn't really get anywhere very quickly. i am determined to conquer it. memorize, i dont know about that. i have been trying to memorize pope's homer for years and by the time i have got the odyssey mostly to memory i have forgotten the iliad.
Fantastic insight. You are talented. Loved the commentary.
Thank you so much, Alex! I really appreciate that :)
Everyone should read Shakespeare's Merchant in Venice. It is his single-most relevant piece to today's era.
Library if America is one of the few publishers, who still produce sewn bound books.
East of Eden is thought-provoking, interesting, and engaging. I've only read it once. It was Steinbeck's personal most preferred work. Principally, he wrote it for his two young sons. I know I should read it again, and I will. It does, to some extent, grab me as a bit of a "soap opera," above all, especially in comparison with The Grapes of Wrath, in my opinion, a more palpable, effective, and influential work.
Bros got blue fuckin eyes😮
I could tell it takes a lot of work to do these videos, they are so good! Well done and thank you.
Thank you so much, Saul! I really appreciate that, my friend! :)
Blood meridian is a difficult read for me. Mcarthy was clearly fascinated with that time period, given his utterly time specific diction and behaviors presented in the novel. Most people I’ve talked to think the book is difficult because of the violence, but I find his language difficult to be honest. Truly comprehending a page of the book sometimes takes me 3-5 minutes. It’s like poetry almost. I’ve been taking it slow though.
Proust Nr One OF COURSE !!
I gave up Ulisses 😢
My nr 1 is Crime and Punishment and nr 2 is Proust - A La Recherche
An "anxiety of influence" really struck me. We are inspired by those who came before us. Yet, if we dare exhibit an abundance of that particular inspiration we are accused of copying or of being a wannabe. This is one of the things that makes Steinbeck so unique! He captured that abundance of influence and made it his own without fear. I'm not a fan of Hemingway, but when I see what Steinbeck has done with his influence I can't help but have great admiration for the man. One doesn't always have to like a writer to appreciate them.
Just finished this excellent novel. Unbelievable! What a wonderful experience. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Ben.
Wow! Congratulations on finishing it, Guillermo! I'm so happy you loved it so much! :)
Just recently rewatched this video which I first saw about a year ago. This motivated me to read a lot of the books on this list. Changed my life.. thank you, your comments on this list are well thought out and passionate. Thank you again 👍
The P &V translation of the brothers karamazov recently became available on audible. I have been reading their translation and listening simultaneously. Yes that really does help wrap my head around what Dostoevsky is writing
With rap music being my true introduction to poetry, here are two of my favorite lyrics: I’m not concerned with generational wealth, that’s its own curse, Anything you want on this cursed earth, probably better off getting it yourself, See what it’s worth -billy woods, Remorseless I deserve to be at peace, the decency remind me. At my core, I’m still the same little boy torn. -Navy Blue, Self Harm
Ulysses is, and always will be, unreadable to me. I gave up in my forties.
I’m still trying 😎
Shocking how I'd always heard of Jane Austen, of "Pride and Prejudice", of other of her books, but never read nor connected books to author! Thank you so much for this top video. You drive to more Jane, and to other authors.
Anna Karenina so many versions of the same exciting tale Watched the beautiful Vivien Leigh in the Korda movie version which l loved and lead me to the book Now reading Constance Garrets translation of the book ( the Pevear&Volokhonsky version is winging its way to me) your excellent review has given me the fire to read and enjoy Excellent videos well done
I'm in my 50s and it took 26 years to read Vanity Fair , so if I go by that time frame , I will still be reading Les Miserables in the next world! On a serious note, I'm tempted with the audio version, which I don't see as cheating and listen while I'm doing chores and crafts.
Mario Puzos Godfather??
Happy Bloomsday! 🎉🎉🎉
Love the Pickwick Papers. Sam Weller surely one of his great characters
I don't know these books well or deeply enough to criticize them. Of the ones I have read, I remember aspects or parts that I liked.
Thank you for your service you have inspired me greatly H.R.Alvarez.
Where does the author Ivan Goncharov (Oblomov) fit into the Russian writers. I have read high praise concerning him and began collecting his books.
Jordan Peterson has stated that through the grand Inquisitor, Dostoevsky makes the strongest case for atheism then destroys it
Thank you so much for this detailed video. I always wanted to read this thinking it will a very good presentation of old Japan. Now I know which translation to pick and just stat it.
A lot of my RUclips time lately has been watching your videos...
Canterbury Tales top 50?? Gatsby over Hamlet, Dante, Homer... cmon man!
Hesse, Huxley, Sartre ... those were my heroes
In college, many years ago, I studied Ancient Greek as my language. I wasn’t very good at it but liked it and enjoyed reading Homer in high school. Now in my fifties, I’m drawn to it again and am taking Fagle’s translation on a road trip. I would like to attempt Pope after I read more of Fagle or even at the same time to enjoy the difference. Maybe Pope will be more accessible if I have a more modern understanding of each passage.
I’ve been listening to David Copperfield’s audiobook, what a gem 💎
Audiobooks made me go outside more, an extra benefit
Chekhov once said "if a person don`t drink and don`t smoke - you will think without a touch if a person is some kind of bastard". Also he had a pet mogoose called "bastard"
Reading this right after reading the alchemist. Haven’t started yet but am excited to get into it
As a high school English teacher, I found great pleasure in teaching this, my favorite novel, for over 20 years. Incredible characters! Wonderful plots, sub-plots, and sub-sub-plots! Life lesson after theme after life lesson after theme, etc., etc. . . ! Twist after turn after twist after turn! I BEGGED my students to not watch any of the movies or read ahead of our daily assignments. Many couldn’t stop themselves. I got such a kick out of looking up to see uneasy teenagers standing at my desk right before class started,, guiltily grasping their copies and confessing in low tones, “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help myself. I couldn’t stop reading. I finished the whole book last night.” They knew what my scowl meant. “Don’t worry, Mrs. H. I promise I won’t tell anybody what happens to--“ And they would name off two, or four, or six or more important characters. And they kept their promises, not wanting to ruin the mystery, surprises, and shocks they knew their classmates were in for. ***My favorite book and my favorite teaching memories. 🤩❤️
This could not have come at a better time for me, as I am reading Genji for the first time as part of a readalong. Thank you so much!
I'm having a mini existential crisis just listening to this video. Wish me luck with the novel, guys! 😂
Oxford is for self-starters. The Dons and tutors are too busy writing their own books to be bothered with under-grads. So, if you enjoy late nights all alone in the college library, and daytimes in the Bodlian, then Oxford is for you. There are open lectures so although I was doing EngLit, I spent a lot of time in the Classics lectures. Also guest lecturers like Ivan Illich came to preach in the lion's den how to "De-school Society". If you love books and don't need to be shepherded through the vast curriculum, then go for it! An Oxford degree is a passport to employment and a lifetime of intellectual adventures.
You inspired me to read LES MISERABLES again, the first time I have read it in unabridged form. What a marvelous experience! Gavroche lovingly offering the smaller gamins shelter in The Elephant monument near the Bastille is one of the most unforgettable scenes I have ever read. Thank you for your brilliant blogs, for your enthusiasm as much as your erudition.
Jane Eyre will always be one of the most relatable fictional people for me. Her personality, especially when she was a child, I felt myself in. I’m only a teenager so I see why I relate more to young Jane then when she got older, I can see myself growing into her. My mum said we (my family reads a classic book every Sunday morning together, I thank her for loving literature so much) Jane Eyre because she saw me so much in her.
Nah Moleire suck ass
While I am partial to the anglosphere, I've got to give lots of credit to the French and the Russians
I’m new to your channel and LOVE your content. As a retired high-school English teacher, I love literature and appreciate your eclectic choices.
Henry James. No one has been harder for me to read than Henry James.
My favorite poem is ode to a nightingale, but i don't truly know if that's because of itself or the fact that i checked the movie Bright Star outb from the library I've day on a whim knowing nothing of him and came away sobbing and in love with Ben Whishaw reading it so beautifully over the credits.
